Gentry and Dr. Gugliuzza in 1993
Dr. Kristene Gugliuzza, UTMB professor of surgery and kidney transplant specialist, met Gentry in 1993 when her birthmother put her up for adoption...

She quickly realized the little girl needed a kidney transplant. The perfect donor just happened to be the same woman who was adopting Gentry. Miracle number one.

The surgery was successful. But as Gentry grew older, she outgrew her donated kidney. Fortunately, a long-time friend of Gentry’s adoptive mother turned out to be another perfect match. Miracle number two.

It’s becoming much more common to see that unrelated people are giving kidneys to people that they know—and even to people that they don’t know,” says Dr. Gugliuzza.

It takes special people to care for the tiniest Texans in need. People like Dr. Gugliuzza and the rest of the UTMB transplant team. People willing to share a part of themselves to keep Gentry and others like her healthy and happy…and to help make miracles happen.
